10 Best Tips to Improve the
Rider's
Shoulders

13. HORSE CROOKED?
Is one shoulder
more forward  than the other?

Holding one shoulder more forward than the other is a very common problem, and results in the horse going crooked.

Just think of sitting on a surfboard.  If you hold one shoulder more forward, then surfboard won't be straight any more.

The shoulders, elbows & hands must be absolutely straight on straight lines, and especially for jumping.

When it comes to advanced work on straight lines such as piaffe or flying changes then it becomes highly noticeable to the judge.

When it comes to jumping:  If the left shoulder is more forward, the horse normally will tap the rail with their right hind.

Get yourself on video:  Videos don't lie!

Q.  When you ride toward the video or mirror...which shoulder is forward...left or right?

Q.  If I put two little torches under your armpits, where would the lights point?  I actually do this for kids camps quite a lot!

Here, demonstrating at Equitana Brisbane, I ask Dr. Liz Owens to put one of her shoulders in front of the other...Notice how the horse's right hind leg is no longer travelling behind the right front leg, and the horse's right ear is in front of the left.
